Eds August 26 2022 lighting strike

These two white pine trees, right on the “Timber Art” section of our public trails, were destroyed by a lightning strike on the afternoon of August 26th, 2022.

Trees are not good conductors of electricity, so when struck by lightning, an enormous amount of heat instantly builds up inside them (said to be hotter than the surface of the sun), causing the sap in a live tree to instantly turn into steam and explode the tree from the inside.

You can clearly see that this is what happened to these two trees by the large chunks of wood scattered in all directions – some embedded into the ground.  Come see for yourself by visiting our trails on Mondays through Saturday’s, 8:30am to 4:00pm, and remember: “When thunder roars, go indoors!”
