SUMMARY:Hybrid Program: The Role of Deer Hunting in Wildlife Conservation
DESCRIPTION:We’re honored to welcome Wildlife Biologist\, Susan McCarthy from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife\, who will share her insights on how regulated deer hunting contributes to ecological balance\, habitat preservation\, and sustainable wildlife management. \nSusan McCarthy is a Wildlife Biologist with the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. She joined MassWildlife in 2010 as the Chronic Wasting Disease Program Coordinator and soon after was hired full time as a Wildlife Technician. As a Biologist\, Susan works within the Wildlife Section where she collaborates with game species project leaders. Her duties include a multitude of field and office tasks regarding the state-wide management of deer\, moose\, black bear\, 14 furbearer species\, wild turkey\, upland game\, and waterfowl. Prior to her work with MassWildlife\, Susan worked for the MassAudubon Coastal Waterbird Program as a Piping Plover and Least Tern technician\, for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a biological technician\, and for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Park Ranger and Natural Resource Specialist. Susan holds a BS in Wildlife Conservation as well as an MS in Wildlife\, Fish and Conservation Biology from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst where her thesis focused on the human dimensions of suburban deer management in Massachusetts. \nWhether you’re a conservation enthusiast\, a hunter\, or simply curious about local wildlife\, this talk offers a valuable opportunity to learn and connect. \nLet’s explore how thoughtful stewardship of our natural resources benefits both wildlife and our communities. \nThis program is available in person or via Zoom!
